CONSERVATION The opening and closing dates of the Prawn fishing season are determined by the Fisheries Department of Western Australia and the Fishing Industry Licensees, in order to maintain a maximum Spawning period and also to achieve a continuing viable commercial catch level.
The Fishing season usually commences in March and closes the end of October each year, subject to moon phases and surveys.
The Shark Bay fisheries rely on the maintenance of healthy sea grass and similar habitats, which form nursery areas and refuges for juvenile prawns. Permanent Nursery Areas are protected and no trawling takes place in these two areas.
This management activity has been designed to provide the industry with a consistent, on-going supply of product and as a consequence, a confident outlook in terms of export market development.
